The Fort of Two Flags
The long drive to the cousins' house ends at a door the child only sees a few times a year, and behind it waits a cousin who has grown a whole centimetre and got better at everything, or so they claim. The visit begins as a contest: who builds faster, who climbs higher, whose paper plane flies farthest. But when the sofa-cushion fort they are both too proud to share collapses on both builders at the exact same moment, the only way to rebuild it before bedtime is together, and the new fort turns out to need two flags. By the goodbye hug in the doorway, the child knows the secret grown-ups already know: a cousin is a friend you never have to make from scratch.
