The Lantern That Wouldn't Light
On the family's biggest celebration night every lantern along the street is burning except the child's own, because this one takes its flame only from a kindness done that same day. The child sets off down the decorated street with it dark and cold in both hands, past neighbours who each need something small: a bin carried, a cat coaxed down, a doorstep swept, and each time the wick sputters a little closer to catching. It finally takes light on the doorstep of the one house nobody remembered to visit, and the whole street looks different seen from there.
