The Other End of the String
A tin can on a string drops over the garden fence one morning, and the voice on the other end is too shy to say its name. The child sends a biscuit down the line, then a drawing, then their best joke, and every gift comes back changed: half eaten, coloured in, answered with an even worse joke. But when the string goes quiet for a whole day, the child must do the truly brave thing and climb through the gap in the hedge to knock, and finds the shy new neighbour standing behind the door holding a welcome gift they were too nervous to give. Some friendships start with a whisper down a string; all of them start with somebody going first.
