On the first morning at the new school there is one coat peg with the child's name already painted on it, worn smooth as though it has been waiting years. Every coat hung on that peg quietly hums the one brave thing its owner did that day, so all morning the child hears other people's small braveries: a hand put up, a lunchbox opened alone, a name said out loud to a stranger. By home time the peg has gone silent, waiting for a brave thing of its own, and the child has to walk back into the classroom and find one before the bell.
