The Quilt That Waited
The big patchwork quilt in the family's house is stitched from a square of everybody who lives there, and one square right in the middle has always been blank, in exactly the child's favourite colour, sewn in long before anyone knew they were coming. Nobody can explain it, so the family spend the story telling the child where each of the other squares came from: an apron, a football shirt, the lining of a wedding dress, a very old pair of curtains. At the end the child threads the needle themselves and finishes the middle square, and the quilt goes on their own bed.
