The Tool With No Name

At the bottom of dad's toolbox lies one heavy brass tool that nobody in the family can name, and the child works out why: it does nothing whatsoever unless two people are holding it at once. Together they use it to build the present the child had planned to make alone, and the tool keeps refusing shortcuts, quietly undoing any part that was rushed. By the time the thing is finished and wrapped, the child has understood that the tool was never the secret, and that the real present was the hours.
