🏡Moving to a New Home

The Box Nobody Packed

In the middle of the empty new bedroom sits one cardboard box labelled in the child's own handwriting, which they definitely did not pack. It trades: put in something from the old house and it hands back a piece of the new one, a shortcut through the park, the name of the boy two doors down, the sound the new front door makes closing behind you. The trades get harder as the easy things run out, and the last one, the thing the child has been keeping right at the bottom, they have to choose to give up on their own, in a room that is finally starting to feel like theirs.
