The Puppy With No Name Yet

The new puppy arrives with an empty name tag, and every name the family try slides straight back off the collar, because by the old rule of naming a name has to be earned by finding out who somebody actually is. So the child spends the week doing the work nobody warned them about: the early walks, the spilled water bowl, the muddy paws on a clean floor, the sitting still and paying attention. The name that finally sticks is one nobody would have picked on the first day, and this time the puppy comes when it is called.
