The Little Door in the Hedge

At the bottom of the garden, and only on the night a child is truly ready, a small round door appears in the hedge, and behind it live the babies who still need a dummy. Posting your own through is the whole of the job, and it turns out to be far harder than it sounds, so the child sits with it in the dark grass for a long while first, thinking about the very small person who will get it next. What comes back out through the door is a tiny lantern for the bedside, the sort only handed to people who have grown.
